India breaks free from the caste system at 193 Gallery

A huge thank you to Beaux-Arts Magazine for highlighting 193 Gallery and our commitment to showcasing artists with unique and distinctive identities. Your support for the contemporary art scene is truly invaluable!

Located near Place de la République, 193 Gallery is dedicated to promoting emerging artists with strong artistic identities. True to this mission, the gallery has introduced rising talents such as Kenyan photographer Thandiwe Muriu, who is currently featured in the Wax exhibition at the Musée de l’Homme.

Now, in collaboration with the curatorial collective TAK Contemporary, the gallery is spotlighting the vibrancy of the Indian art scene by showcasing seven artists: Salik Ansari, K.G. Babu, Sudhakar Chippa, Satyanarayana Gavara, Rajyashri Goody, Pavan Kavitkar, and Sumakshi Singh. The exhibition Mango Man. Allegories of Political Propositionsexplores social and political structures in India, where caste-based discrimination remains a reality. The title also plays on the dual meaning of the Hindi phrase Aam Aadmi, which translates to both "common man" and "mango man," a term that has become emblematic of the lower classes in Indian political discourse.
